A new year with new purposes

The 2017 has just begun and I wish to tell again my adventures in programming and my IT passions in general. It is an ambition because my job is very heavy and gives me little time left. But like an Italian idiom that says "There's no harm in trying", I want to risk!

It is a long time I didn't post any new article on my site (the last was published on July 2015), this is due mainly to technical problems of the database chosen at the beginning1 and to personal problems: lack of planning and indolence. I am not perfect!

As you can see thanks to my holydays in August, I had already adjusted and updated my site, now it is on Drupal 8 and uses the MySQL database, so I can write again without the annoying "500 Error" messages and I think that it is more fast. I had many problems with the migration of the content, because the multilingual feature changes a lot in D8. In fact in D7 there is a node per every language and this is linked to the others, while in D8 all the translations are in the same node. Very funny!

Currently the content is the same of the old site, therefore I don't know how it will coexist with the new one, I hope in a pacific cohabitation without any other fixes.

Relating to my personal problems... I am studying a solution, but it is still a working progress. Anyway my occupation gives me several sparks for new articles and following the professional courses, I have collected interesting material for good pieces.

Moreover my work experience at Pisa and Vicenza in the management data field has gave me new incentives and ideas.

In particular some of them could be:

  • Drupal 8 and the migration from D7;
  • Wordcloud of a series of PDF files with R;
  • Using the calendar entries to populate a spreadsheet via javascript;
  • software to solve a few little engineering problems;
  • a bash script to shuffle smartly a MP3 folder;
  • and much more.
  • 1. When I started to create my website on Altervista host, there was a charge for the use of MySQL and so I used SQLite, a free-cost solution that has become problematic since my content has increased.
