Working from scratch, following simplicity

Useful handbooks and resources for EPANET 2

Looking for a good tutorial to start the study of EPANET 2.0, a public domain hydraulic analysis package for water supply networks, I was impressed for the high quality and origin of most of the documents that I found on Internet. Even more for the resources developed thanks to its toolkit. So I have collected the most interesting ones from my point of view.

In the previous article, Pipe network analysis with open source software: PVnet and EPANET, I introduced two software to design and check a pipe network which work under Linux thanks to Wine. I know pretty well the first one as in the past I used it for design a network, even so I am curious to try the second for its interesting and advanced features:

  • Hydraulic Modeling Capabilities
  • Water Quality Modeling Capabilities

Useful resources and handbooks for EPANET 2

Before doing this, I made some research on Internet and I have discovered a huge amount of quality resources about it. There are not only tutorials and manuals written by qualified specialists, but even discussion groups and resources for other software and programming languages. In the following sections I highlight my favourite finds.

Documentation and discussion groups

A technical software without a solid reference book and a vively community is useless, but in this case the problem doesn’t exist. In my opinion they are:

Useful resources

Some of the major ones are:

  • GHydraulics is a QGIS plugin that allows to analyze water supply networks using EPANET. It also contains a function to calculate economic diameters based on given flowrates. The functions are accessible from the QGIS plugin menu and toolbars (starting with QGIS 0.10.0 the GHydraulic plugin can be installed directly from QGIS).
  • EpaCAD is a free software which easily converts an AUTOCAD file into an EPANET one. EPACAD is able to automatically import the main properties of elements, largely providing the required information to build a network.
  • EPANET2 0.4.0.1dev - it is a python interface for the popular urban drainage model EPANET 2.0 engine. This python package is copyrighted by Assela Pathirana and released under GNU General Public License version 3. The library is compatible with Python 3.0.

Please let me know if you are informed on other interesting resources!
